Wazir Mansion
Wazir Mansion is a two-story stone building in Kharadar built in the late 1800s with simple rooms and narrow staircases. The house now contains exhibitions featuring photographs, documents, and personal items displayed across multiple galleries and a reading room.
The house was built between 1860 and 1870 using local tiles and lime mortar as a private residence in Kharadar. The government took control in 1953 after recognizing its historical significance, with major restoration work completed in 2010.
The name comes from Wazir Ali Ponwala, who purchased the house in the 1940s and gave it its lasting identity. The building holds deep meaning for many Pakistanis as a place connected to their nation's founding story and serves as a site of remembrance.
The museum sits on Barkati Street in the busy Kharadar neighborhood and is accessible from surrounding commercial areas. Visitors should expect narrow rooms and steep stairs, so comfortable shoes and patience with confined spaces are helpful.
The house was built with lime and jute-based mortar that helped it withstand Karachi's hot and humid climate for over a century and a half. This traditional construction method is rare today and demonstrates the local craftsmanship of that era.
