Sant'Angelo, Open-air museum in Sant'Angelo, Italy
Sant'Angelo is an open-air museum in a small village where more than fifty large-scale murals cover building facades throughout the settlement. These artworks depict characters from classic fairy tales and legends created in diverse artistic styles and techniques.
The artistic project started in 2017 as an initiative to revive a shrinking village through creative expression. Since then, the location has transformed into a cultural destination that draws artists and visitors from various places.
The murals tell stories from classic fairy tales such as Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio, with artists incorporating the faces of local residents into their works. This blend of neighborhood people and world-famous tales makes each walk through the streets feel personal and connected to the community.
Visitors can explore the murals by walking freely through the village streets on their own or joining a guided tour. Guided tours last approximately two hours and provide detailed explanations about each artwork and its background.
A mural titled Cappuccetto Rosso by artist Vera Bugatti gained international recognition in 2021 as one of the finest street art pieces globally. This particular artwork demonstrates how locally created pieces can achieve worldwide attention.
