Taquerias El Mexicano
Taquerias El Mexicano is a Mexican restaurant in Little Havana with bright colors, neon signs, and warm wooden furnishings decorated with colorful artwork. The current owners prepare homemade tortillas daily and make fresh sauces, filling the space with the aroma of tortilla cooking.
The restaurant was founded in 1985 by cousins Guillermo and Mario Martinez, who had previously lived in Chicago before settling in Miami. After many years of family operation, Mad Room Hospitality took over and modernized it while preserving its core traditions.
The name references the traditional Mexican taco and the family's connection to their homeland. The restaurant serves as a gathering place where Mexican culture coexists with the Cuban-influenced neighborhood around it.
The restaurant is housed in an easy-to-spot building with bright colors and neon signs, making it simple to find. Upstairs, visitors discover a lounge called Los Altos with drinks and entertainment, while the ground floor serves quick meals.
The upstairs space Los Altos was once used for large family celebrations like quinceañeras and is now a lively lounge with couches, a bar, and performers dressed as luchadoras dancing behind curtains. This transformation shows how the restaurant blends old and new energy together.
