RBI Monetary Museum

RBI Monetary Museum, Monetary museum in Fort district, Mumbai, India

The RBI Monetary Museum holds around 1,500 objects that tell the story of currency and payment systems, including ancient coins, paper money, and financial instruments. The collection is organized into six thematic sections covering different aspects of money through time.

The museum displays coins dating from the 6th century BCE, covering periods such as the Indus Valley civilization, Kushan Empire, Gupta period, and British rule. These objects document how money and payment systems changed and evolved across many centuries.

The exhibits show how money was used and valued across India over time, from simple barter systems to modern digital payments. You can see how people in different periods conducted their daily trade and business.

The museum is located in Amar Building on Sir Phirozshah Mehta Road and is easily accessible by public transport. Entry is free, though you should check opening times before visiting, as it remains closed on Mondays.

The collection includes rare paper money from China and Southeast Asia, showing how trade connections influenced currency forms across regions. Interactive displays also show current exchange rates in real time.
