Zamek Dunajec

Zamek Dunajec, Medieval castle museum in Niedzica, Poland

Description

Burg Dunajec is a museum housed in a medieval castle perched on a limestone hill in Niedzica, around 566 meters above sea level. The walls rise 300 meters from the Dunajec River, overlooking the waters of Czorsztyn Lake.

History

Kokosz Berzevicy commissioned the fortress in the early 14th century to serve as a Hungarian watchtower on the Polish border. It fulfilled this role until the end of the First World War.

Culture

Period furniture, antique clocks and art collections fill the rooms where Hungarian noble families once lived. Several chambers display weapons and everyday objects from past centuries.

Practical

The castle opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. during winter months. In summer it welcomes visitors daily from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Did you know?

An Incan quipu sits in the collection, discovered after the Second World War. The knotted cord system reportedly holds clues to hidden treasures.
