Kaum Jakarta, Traditional Indonesian restaurant and bar in Menteng, Indonesia.
Kaum Jakarta is an Indonesian restaurant and bar set across two connected buildings in the Menteng neighborhood of central Jakarta. The dining rooms have high windows, an open kitchen, and teak furnishings alongside handcrafted decorative elements sourced from different parts of Indonesia.
The concept was first launched in Hong Kong in 2016 before being brought to Jakarta, which is its natural home territory. Opening in the Indonesian capital marked an effort to bring the same international approach back to the country the food actually comes from.
The name Kaum means "people" or "community" in Indonesian, which reflects the idea behind the concept. Dishes draw from many regions of the archipelago and follow traditional recipes that are rarely found in restaurant kitchens today.
The restaurant is on Jalan Dr. Kusuma Atmaja in central Jakarta, within easy reach of the Menteng area. It serves both lunch and dinner, and the bar stays open late on Friday and Saturday nights, so the feel of the place shifts noticeably as the evening goes on.
The ceiling panels inside were made by craftspeople from Toraja, a remote highland area of Sulawesi known for its wood carving tradition. This type of work is normally reserved for ceremonial buildings and burial houses, making its presence in a dining room quite out of the ordinary.
