Fonseca Port Wine Cellars

Fonseca Port Wine Cellars is a wine storage facility in Vila Nova de Gaia where Port wines age in large wooden casks under steady conditions. The space holds thousands of containers in rows, each holding wines at different stages of maturation that develop character over many years.

The company was founded in 1815 and began producing its first Vintage Port in 1840, marking the start of a long tradition. These early years set the foundation for what would become an established name in the Douro region.

The cellars reflect a deep connection between the Douro Valley community and winemaking, with the family name rooted in Portuguese heritage. Walking through, you notice how the space represents generations of knowledge passed down through hands-on work and tradition.

The producer pioneered the use of entirely organic grapes and operates three of its own vineyards. All three estates lie in the Douro region, where the vines grow under natural conditions.
