Olympos Ancient City, Archaeological site with Roman ruins in Antalya, Turkey

Olympos Ancient City is an archaeological site with ruins distributed along a river valley, displaying preserved walls, tombs, temples, and a theater that once stood here. The structures spread from inland areas down toward the Mediterranean Sea, revealing how this ancient port settlement was organized and built.

The city was founded in the 3rd century BCE and became one of the six leading cities in the Lycian League with considerable political influence in the region. It maintained its importance through the Roman period before eventually declining.

The settlement served as an important center for early Christian faith, with local religious leaders who shaped spiritual life across the wider region. The veneration of these figures left a lasting mark on how people understood faith and community at this location.

The site can be accessed from several entry points near Olympos and Cirali beaches, with stone-paved pathways connecting different sections. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow sufficient time to explore the scattered remains across the valley.

A sarcophagus inscribed with a ship captain's name features detailed carvings that reveal information about sea routes and naval practices of the time. Such personal objects help us understand who lived in the city and how they spent their daily lives.
