Kale
Kale is an ancient fortress in Hisariçi Mahallesi positioned on elevated ground with views across the town and shoreline. The complex contains remnants of Byzantine churches, a trade hall called the Bedesten, underground water cisterns, a dungeon, and multiple towers including the notable Red Tower built in 1226 and a watchtower rebuilt in the 1500s.
The fortress was built over many centuries with most of its structure from the Seljuk period, though traces of earlier civilizations remain visible. Over two millennia it has endured conquests, changes of rule, and different purposes ranging from a Byzantine stronghold to reshaping under Islamic rulers.
The fortress sits at the heart of the Hisariçi Mahallesi neighborhood and shapes how locals relate to their surroundings. The walls and towers serve as a natural gathering point for walks and quiet moments of contemplation.
Visit with sturdy footwear because pathways are uneven and narrow, and bring water as there are few facilities inside the site. Daytime exploration works best when passages are clearly visible and you can safely navigate the ruins.
An 18th century lighthouse still stands at the fort's edge and guided ships safely along the coast for centuries. An ancient shipyard from the Seljuk period reveals how vessels were built and functions today as a museum where you can see the construction techniques.
