Alanya Shipyard, Maritime construction facility in Alanya, Turkey
Alanya Shipyard is a historic maritime construction facility in southern Turkey featuring five vaulted stone chambers separated by pointed arched walls made of cut stone blocks. The structure demonstrates the layout and building methods of a medieval shipbuilding operation adapted to local resources and techniques.
Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat founded the shipyard in 1228 as part of his plan to expand naval power and control Mediterranean trade routes. The facility became a key center for building and maintaining merchant and military vessels during the medieval period in this region.
The shipyard transitioned from active production into a maritime museum, and today it displays navigation tools, ship models, and traditional construction techniques that reflect the region's seafaring heritage. You can observe how local craftsmanship shaped the building of vessels in this part of the Mediterranean.
The site is easily reached from central Alanya and sits next to the Red Tower in the harbor area, making it convenient to visit alongside other nearby attractions. The open layout allows you to walk through the stone chambers at your own pace and explore the exhibition spaces without feeling rushed.
Each of the five chambers is called an eye and contains different features such as a freshwater well, ancient lifting mechanisms, and original stone construction elements. These names and the preserved blocks reflect how medieval workers organized and equipped this working space for shipbuilding.
