Kızıl Kule, Historical tower in Alanya, Turkey.
Kızıl Kule, also known as the Red Tower, is an octagonal tower built from red bricks on the harbor front of Alanya, in Antalya Province. It rises directly above the port and now operates as a museum with several floors open to visitors.
The tower was built in 1226 under Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I and designed by a Syrian architect from Aleppo named Ebu Ali Reha. It was conceived as a defensive structure to protect the harbor and is one of the clearest surviving examples of Razi-style architecture in the region.
The tower houses the Alanya Ethnography Museum, displaying regional objects and handicrafts that reflect local traditions. The exhibits show how people in this region lived and worked over time.
Climbing the interior stairs requires some effort, so wearing sturdy shoes makes the visit more comfortable, especially on the steeper upper floors. Going in the morning tends to be quieter and gives more time to look around without crowds.
Inside the tower, there were once cisterns built to store fresh water for the garrison, in addition to space for weapons and supplies. This means the structure was designed from the start to withstand a long siege without needing outside support.
