Unkai Terrace

Unkai Terrace is an observation deck positioned at high elevation where visitors can watch clouds filling the valleys below and creating a natural white ocean effect. The structure features special walkways and hammocks that allow different vantage points to experience this phenomenon.

The terrace was developed as part of the Hoshino Resort Tomamu complex and served as the first facility specifically designed for cloud viewing in the Hokkaido region. It introduced a new approach to nature-based tourism in Japan's northernmost main island area.

Visitors gather here during early morning hours to share a quiet moment watching the natural display below. The experience brings together people seeking connection with the landscape in a simple, focused way.

The best visiting window is from May to October when cloud conditions are most favorable for viewing. Gondola access is required to reach the terrace, and warm layers are recommended since temperatures at altitude are significantly cooler than below.

The site works best during early morning hours when cloud formations are at their thickest and most visually striking. Many visitors specifically plan trips around these dawn viewing windows to experience the phenomenon at its peak.
