Bayworld: Snake Park
Bayworld: Snake Park is a reptile facility in Port Elizabeth with snakes, lizards, crocodiles, tortoises, and terrapins from Africa and around the world. The facility is part of the larger Bayworld complex, which also includes a museum and oceanarium.
The facility was founded in 1919 and has displayed reptiles for over 100 years. It grew from early interest in reptiles and developed into a center for reptile education and species protection.
The park displays snakes and reptiles native to the Nelson Mandela Bay region. Visitors learn how these animals fit into the local environment and what role they play in nature.
The park is open daily except Christmas, from morning until late afternoon, and is located in Humewood near beaches and hotels. Plan to arrive early to spend time in the reptile gardens and the adjacent museum.
The park houses some of the world's longest and most dangerous snakes, including the black mamba and puff adder. Visitors can also watch snakes that play dead to ward off predators, a fascinating survival strategy.
