Centro Faunistico “Uomini e Lupi”
Centro Faunistico Uomini e Lupi is a wildlife park in Entracque focused on wolves and local animal species. The facility spans two areas: a museum section in the village and a nature area about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) away with observation towers where some wolves live in large enclosures.
Wolves were nearly eliminated from this region but have returned to the western Alps over the past 60 years. The center documents the true story of Ligabue, a male wolf tracked with a radio collar in 2004 who traveled vast distances between the Apennines and the Alps.
The center explores the relationship between people and wolves, a theme deeply rooted in local stories and legends. The exhibitions show how wolves appear in folk tales and what role they play in regional culture and daily understanding.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as a visit typically takes about an hour and involves walking paths. Check the website for opening hours since the center operates only during certain seasons.
The wolves in the park come from difficult situations like accidents or captive births and cannot survive in the wild, yet they serve as living examples of the Italian wolf species. An underground tunnel museum with a fictional character named Caterina guides visitors through different habitats explaining how wolves truly live.
