Eisenbahnwelten
Eisenbahnwelten is a large model railway layout covering more than 7500 square meters with roughly 5200 meters of track where trains run regularly in 1:22.5 scale. The display recreates railway lines from the region, including famous routes like the Semmering Railway and the Kirnitzschtal Tramway, with detailed landscapes, buildings, and bridges.
The layout has been built gradually by the Hanisch family since Easter 2007 and holds the title of the world's largest garden railway using Lehmann Gross Bahn trains. Over two years, an overgrown area was transformed with hundreds of tons of sandstone and a recreated Elbe River landscape into the detailed miniature world seen today.
The site tells the story of how railways shaped life in the Saxon Switzerland region, connecting towns and villages through transport lines that became vital to the area. Visitors see miniature villages with stations, bridges, and buildings that reflect how trains influenced daily life and local communities.
The site opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM with Monday closures, and last entry is at 5 PM. The grounds are fully accessible with wide paths, ample parking nearby, and a restaurant with terrace available for rest and refreshment during your visit.
Visitors can run their own model trains on a test track or book guided tours with professional trains, extending the experience beyond passive observation. Major manufacturers like Märklin and PIKO regularly test new models on this layout before market release.
