Naturerbe Zentrum RÜGEN, Nature education center in Binz, Germany.
Naturerbe Zentrum RÜGEN is an environmental education facility in Binz, Germany, located on a 1900-hectare forested area. A wooden treetop walkway extends over 1250 meters and leads between 4 and 17 meters above the ground through the beech canopies.
The area once belonged to the restricted military zones of East Germany and was later taken over by the German Federal Foundation for Environmental Protection as natural heritage. The treetop walkway and observation tower opened in 2013 to show the history of natural regeneration.
The treetop walkway takes its name from the ancient beech forests that have reclaimed former military grounds. Visitors experience the different forest layers from floor to canopy and understand how nature has recovered after decades of restricted access.
The center opens depending on the season between 9:30 AM and 7:00 PM, with reduced hours during winter. The path is wheelchair accessible and allows families with strollers to enjoy a barrier-free walk.
The Eagle's Nest observation tower was deliberately built around a 30-meter-tall copper beech so the tree continues to grow and merge with the tower structure. From the platform you can see as far as the church tower in Stralsund and the Baltic coast on clear days.
