Ssamziegil, Shopping mall in Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea
Ssamziegil is a shopping mall in Insa-dong, Seoul, with four floors above ground and two below. It houses around ninety shops selling crafts, food, and tea, arranged along a spiral walkway that leads to a rooftop garden.
The mall opened in 2004 on the site of the former Youngbin Garden, after a campaign by local cultural figures saved twelve street shops from eviction. Those shops were integrated into the design, and their presence helped shape the character of the building.
The name Ssamziegil comes from the Korean word for a small pouch, and the space is designed to feel like a village street where artisans work in open workshops. Visitors can watch craftspeople making pottery, jewelry, or paper goods, and the courtyard often hosts small exhibitions or performances.
The building is open every day from mid-morning until evening, but it closes on New Year's Day and during the Chuseok holiday. The walkway slopes gently upward, so you can wander through all the floors without stairs and reach the rooftop garden at your own pace.
The building's layout forms a diamond-shaped courtyard surrounded by a continuous ramp, so you can walk from the ground floor to the roof without encountering a single step. The rooftop garden offers a view of the traditional tiled roofs of Insa-dong, a sight many visitors miss.
