Seungdong Church, Church building and tangible cultural heritage in Insa-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

Seungdong Church is a brick church building at 37-1 Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, designated Tangible Cultural Heritage of Seoul No. 130 on April 6, 2001. It has one basement and two above-ground floors, covering 773.56 m², in a Romanesque style with red-brick walls. The cross-shaped gable roof has a large front gable and a two-tiered side gable; the facade holds a large arched window (now a rectangular modern window), two small arched openings (now modern doors), and a circular window in the gable. The designer and builder was the third pastor, Clark Allen (Kwak An-ryeon).

Seungdong Church was founded in 1904 by members of the Independence Association after a split from the Hongmundo Church. In February 1919 its basement hosted about 20 representatives from Seoul's professional schools who discussed plans for the March 1st Movement, and the declaration was secretly printed there. Pastor Cha Sang-jin suffered persecution by the Japanese police for this.

The name Seungdong (勝洞, "victorious village") was adopted after Kil Seon-ju's sermons during the 1907 Pyongyang revival, replacing the earlier Gongdanggol Church name. The congregation long carried a nationalist character, and its members included figures from the Independence Association. The church also hosted the founding of the Korean YWCA, which opened a path for women's social work and service.

The building sits on narrow streets in Insa-dong and is reachable on foot from Tapgol Park. It blends into the traditional neighborhood, so allow time to explore the surrounding lanes and find the entrance.

In an era of strict social hierarchies, the church appointed a butcher to a leadership position, a bold move that challenged conventions. This act reflected a progressive outlook that accepted people based on their character rather than their social background.
