Collapsed Azure Window
The Collapsed Azure Window was once a natural limestone arch on the coast of Gozo near San Lawrenz that rose from the sea like a gateway and formed gradually through waves and wind. The opening let seawater flow through it, creating a striking natural formation that drew visitors.
The Azure Window likely formed in the 1800s as seawater and rain eroded limestone cliffs, with softer layers wearing away faster than others. In March 2017, the structure collapsed during a strong storm and sank into the sea.
The site holds deep meaning for Maltese people as a symbol of the island's natural beauty and the power of nature to shape landscapes. Visitors today regard the location as a place to reflect on how even impressive formations can change and vanish over time.
The site is reachable by boat, and many tour operators offer trips along the coast to see the remaining rock formations and nearby sights. The area is safe to visit, but be aware of strong sea currents near the water.
The site appeared in several films and TV series, including Game of Thrones, which made it famous worldwide. The sunken remains now form a new underwater landscape with caves and tunnels that divers enjoy exploring.
