Cenote X'Lakaj, Tourist attraction and natural body of water in Chichimilá, Mexico
Cenote X'Lakaj is a natural body of water set in the ground in the town of Chichimilá, in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. The open pool is surrounded by vegetation and tree roots that grow close to the water's edge.
Cenotes across Yucatán served as the main water sources for Maya communities for centuries. This one in Chichimilá was part of that network of water points that made life possible across the peninsula.
The cenote sits in Chichimilá and is easy to reach from surrounding towns. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to visit, when the water is coolest and the place is at its quietest.
The water in X'Lakaj stays surprisingly cold even in warm weather, fed by the underground cave system that runs beneath the peninsula. That same network connects many of Yucatán's cenotes below the surface.
