Cenote Dzitnup, sinkhole in Yucatan, Mexico
Cenote Dzitnup consists of two separate limestone caves named Xkeken and Samula, each with a circular pool fed by natural underground water systems. Both caves feature openings in the rock ceiling that allow daylight to reach the water below.
These caves formed over millions of years as underground rivers slowly dissolved the limestone bedrock and carved out hollow spaces. Water continues to flow through these subterranean channels and feeds the pools within the caves today.
The site provides changing rooms, lockers, and showers for visitors who want to prepare before entering. Wear shoes with good grip since the rocks become slippery when wet from splashing water.
In the Xkeken cave, thick tree roots hang down from above and reach toward the water surface, forming natural columns. These roots are clearly visible and give the cave a distinctive character.
