Sacred Cenote, Ancient ceremonial cenote in Chichen Itza, Mexico
The Sacred Cenote is a natural sinkhole in Chichén Itzá formed by limestone collapse, featuring steep walls that drop down to dark water below. The basin served as a ritual center for centuries and remains a major element of the archaeological site today.
This sinkhole served as a place of worship for the Maya civilization over many centuries. Early twentieth-century archaeologists recovered thousands of objects from below the waterline, including gold and jade pieces that had been deposited as offerings over time.
For the Maya, this sinkhole held deep spiritual power as a place where they honored their gods and made offerings to the waters. The natural setting with steep walls and dark water created a sacred space where people gathered to perform important rituals.
Visitors can view the water from observation platforms positioned along the rim, though swimming is not permitted. Stick to the marked walkways and railings for safe viewing of the water's surface and the surrounding walls.
Underwater explorations have uncovered human remains and personal objects on the bottom, revealing how central this location was to ritual practices. These discoveries suggest that the sinkhole served as a final resting place for offerings of great spiritual importance.
