Sacred Cenote, Ancient ceremonial cenote in Chichen Itza, Mexico
The Sacred Cenote measures 165 feet from north to south and 200 feet from east to west, forming a natural limestone well with steep walls.
Archaeological excavations in the early 1900s revealed numerous artifacts including jade objects, gold items, and ceramics that were thrown into the waters as offerings.
The Maya civilization used this natural sinkhole for religious ceremonies, making offerings to the water deity through valuable objects and human sacrifices.
The cenote contains underwater vegetation and does not permit swimming, but visitors can view it from designated platforms during Chichen Itza archaeological site tours.
Two observation platforms on different levels stand on the southern edge, connected to the main Chichen Itza complex by a 300-meter limestone road.
