Cenote Cristal, Natural sinkhole near Tulum, Mexico

Cenote Cristal is a natural sinkhole in Quintana Roo with transparent freshwater that reaches depths of about 15 meters. The clear water surface offers a spacious swimming area shaped by the gradual erosion of limestone bedrock.

This sinkhole formed over millions of years through limestone dissolution, becoming one of thousands of freshwater systems across the Yucatan Peninsula. The site has held importance for human settlement in the region throughout different periods.

Cenotes held spiritual meaning for the Maya people, serving as water sources where they gathered and performed ceremonies tied to their beliefs about the sacred underworld.

The site is easy to visit and works well for swimming and exploring in comfortable conditions. Bring towels and swimwear, and allow time for activities like snorkeling or simply relaxing by the water.

Cenote Cristal lies just off Highway 307 near Tulum, beside the larger Cenote Escondido; swimmers often move between the two. Its open, sunlit pool contrasts with the cavern cenotes nearby, and the ledges along the rim are where visitors sit and watch fish in the shallows.
