Aghjkaberd

Aghjkaberd is a medieval fortress ruin perched on a mountain peak in Tavush Province, surrounded by dense forest and steep terrain. The remains include basalt walls, towers, residential structures, a church, water cisterns, and bathing facilities spread across the slopes.

The fortress was established during the medieval period and was also known as Cayen, where Armenian princes resided and oversaw administrative control of surrounding territories. Over time it became an important military and governing center for the mountainous Tavush region.

The site held deep meaning for the region as a governing center where decisions affecting many people were made. It represents how communities in this mountainous area organized their lives and protected their interests over time.

The site is located about 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Ijevan and requires hiking over mountainous terrain with dense forest coverage. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time, as the path is demanding and trails are not always clearly marked.

The name Aghjkaberd means Girl's Fortress and refers to a noble woman who commanded her army and successfully defended against numerous attacks. This story reveals that women held significant leadership roles at this site, which was remarkable for the time period.
