Tavush Province, Administrative region in northeastern Armenia

Tavush is a province in northeastern Armenia characterized by mountainous terrain with deep valleys and extensive forests throughout. Major towns like Ijevan, Dilijan, and Noyemberyan serve as the main population centers, though most inhabitants live in smaller rural communities.

The region became part of the Russian Empire following the Russo-Persian War in the early 1800s. This period of foreign administration lasted until Armenian independence, fundamentally shaping the region's development.

The Armenian Apostolic Church shapes daily life here through numerous medieval monasteries scattered across the region. Visitors can see these places of worship still standing in the landscape, drawing both pilgrims and travelers.

Exploring this region is easiest by car, as the main towns are connected by mountain roads that can be challenging in certain seasons. Travelers should check local conditions before planning mountain routes or visiting remote villages.

The Agstev River system cuts through the province with several tributaries, creating a network of deep gorges and valleys. These waterways have shaped human settlement for thousands of years and offer unexpected green corridors for walkers to discover.
