Tavush Fortress, Medieval fortress in Berd, Armenia

Tavush Fortress is a fortified structure perched on a mountain ridge in the Tavush Region, positioned at around 900 meters elevation overlooking multiple valleys below. The ruins consist of stone walls and defensive positions arranged strategically to survey broad expanses of territory.

The fortress was established as a military post during the Bagratid dynasty in the 9th century to protect the region against invaders. It served an important function during a period when multiple kingdoms competed for control of the mountain regions.

The fortress displays Armenian military building methods, with walls constructed from locally sourced stone using techniques developed over centuries. Today, visitors can observe how the defense structures worked and understand the craftsmanship that went into their construction.

The ascent to the fortress follows marked trails starting from the town of Berd and demands sturdy footwear due to steep, rocky ground. Setting out early in the day allows for better visibility while exploring the site and ensures a safe return before darkness falls.

The fortress walls feature specially positioned observation points that once monitored movement along ancient trade routes connecting Armenian territories with neighboring lands. These strategic viewpoints reveal the site's economic importance beyond its defensive role in connecting regional commerce.
