Tavush Province

The Tavush province encompasses 2,704 square kilometers of mountainous terrain with steep valleys and extensive forests at elevations between 380 and 2993 meters.

In 1813, following the Treaty of Gulistan after the Russo-Persian War, Tavush became part of the Russian Empire and formed the Elizavetpol administrative district.

The Armenian Apostolic Church maintains a strong presence through the Diocese of Tavush, headquartered in Ijevan, overseeing numerous medieval monasteries and religious sites.

The region contains three main urban centers - Ijevan, Dilijan, and Noyemberyan - with 57.9 percent of the population residing in rural communities focused on agriculture.

The Agstev River system forms deep valleys throughout the province, creating a network of tributaries including the Getik, Voskepar, and Sarnajur rivers.
