Deghdznut Monastery, Medieval monastery in Tavush Province, Armenia

Deghdznut Monastery is a monastic complex in Acharkut featuring a main church with a rectangular domed hall constructed from dark pink tufa stone and detailed architectural ornamentation. The structure demonstrates characteristic Armenian building forms with carefully designed details reflecting the craftsmanship standards of its medieval period.

The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Archimandrite Arakel, with the construction of its narthex representing a significant building phase of the complex. This development was part of the broader religious construction activity in the region during the medieval period.

The monastery displays numerous khachkars, intricately carved stone monuments that reflect the region's deep tradition of Armenian stone craftsmanship. Visitors can observe how these monuments served as both spiritual markers and artistic expressions of the community's identity and beliefs.

The monastery is located about 9 kilometers southeast of Acharkut and is accessible via forest paths along the Khndzorkut River. Visitors should prepare for natural terrain conditions and wear appropriate hiking shoes, as access involves walking through wooded areas.

The narthex features an distinctive roof design with pairs of intersecting arches and a central opening called an erdik. This architectural solution was developed by medieval Armenian builders to address specific structural and lighting needs of the space.
