Edificio República, Brutalist office building in San Nicolas district, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Edificio República is a brutalist office building in San Nicolas, Buenos Aires, featuring a white aluminum and glass facade that curves along Avenida Eduardo Madero. The structure spans 20 floors of office space with nine elevators and three underground parking levels.
The building was completed between 1994 and 1996 during a period of major transformation in Argentine corporate design. Telefonica Argentina established its headquarters there upon completion and remained until the company relocated its operations.
The building marks a shift in how Buenos Aires developed its skyline, introducing modern corporate architecture to a historically traditional cityscape. Its presence reflects the economic transformation that reshaped this neighborhood.
The building is easily accessible from Avenida Eduardo Madero or Bouchard Street and the exterior is visible from public areas. Visitors should note that interior office spaces may have restricted access, though the public plaza at the base offers a good viewing point.
A triangular public plaza at the building's base features a design inspired by a ship's deck, created by Balmori Associates. This creative plaza design brings an unexpected outdoor space to the business district.
