SAFICO building, Art Deco office building on Avenida Corrientes, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The SAFICO building is an office tower on Avenida Corrientes in Buenos Aires, with 25 floors and a symmetrical main facade. A six-floor pyramid section rises at the rear, giving the structure an unusual profile when seen from certain angles.
Swiss engineer Walter Moll designed the building in 1934, at a time when Buenos Aires was growing upward at a rapid pace. It was one of the early towers to change the look of Avenida Corrientes.
The entrance hall of the building still shows Art Deco details, with geometric ornaments and polished materials typical of the period. Stepping inside gives a clear contrast to the plain exterior, revealing the care put into the interior design.
The building stands directly on Avenida Corrientes, one of the main streets in central Buenos Aires, and is easy to reach on foot. To see both the front facade and the rear pyramid section, it helps to step back or walk around the block.
The top three floors were originally built as a private apartment for a SAFICO executive, which was a rare arrangement for an office building at that time. Having a personal residence at the top of a downtown tower was something few buildings of that era could claim.
