Spinetto Shopping, Shopping center in Balvanera, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Spinetto Shopping is a shopping center in the Balvanera neighborhood of Buenos Aires, occupying a full city block between Matheu, Adolfo Alsina, Pichincha, and Moreno streets. Inside, two retail floors and a food court fill the space, with parking available within the building.
The building dates to 1894, when David Spinetto opened a public market here designed by architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo. In 1986, the cooperative El Hogar Obrero gutted and rebuilt the interior to convert it into a shopping center.
The name honors David Spinetto, the founder of the original market that once served the Balvanera neighborhood. Today visitors come for everyday shopping but also to eat at the food court, which draws a mixed crowd from the surrounding streets.
The building has entrances on all four surrounding streets, so it is easy to enter from any direction. Drivers can park directly inside the building, while the surrounding area in Balvanera is well served by public transit.
Although the interior was completely torn down in 1986, the four original exterior walls from the 19th century were kept standing and are still visible from the street today. This means the building presents a historic face to the block while hiding a fully rebuilt core inside.
