Comptoir de la Gastronomie, French restaurant and fine food shop in Paris, France
Comptoir de la Gastronomie is a French restaurant and fine food shop located on rue Montmartre in central Paris. The space holds a wood front and an old-fashioned interior with a cash register, butcher hooks and oak shelves, while a workshop below the shop is used to make foie gras, smoked salmon and charcuterie on site.
The shop was founded in 1894, and in 1989 Dominique Loï took over a wholesale foie gras business at this address to create the current establishment. His two daughters later continued the family trade, keeping the wood front and the trading spirit of the street while updating the interior in 2017.
The old shop counters and wooden front echo the nearby former market district of Les Halles, where street traders once fed the city. Today the place keeps that memory alive through the daily preparation of French charcuterie classics, and passersby can watch the activity through the windows before stepping inside.
The shop stays open most days from mid-morning to evening, while the restaurant welcomes guests from Tuesday to Saturday around midday and late into the evening. You can enter the fine food counter during restaurant hours for last-minute purchases, and dining reservations should be made well ahead for groups.
Under the shop there is a dedicated workshop where charcutiers prepare the foie gras, smoked salmon and other cured goods sold and served upstairs. This makes it one of the few places in the neighborhood where shoppers can buy fresh items made in the same building they are standing in.
