Lac Blanc, Alpine lake in Vanoise National Park, France
Lac Blanc sits at 2434 meters in a high alpine basin surrounded by the peaks of the Péclet-Polset massif. The water is clear and shallow, with shores of rock and alpine meadow that extend toward glacier-covered slopes.
The area was opened for mountaineers and hikers in the early 20th century. A mountain refuge built in 1927 marks this period of alpine tourism development in the region.
Shepherds have long used the pastures around this lake, bringing their animals to graze during summer months. Along the trail today, you can still see traditional mountain farms that reflect this ongoing practice.
The hiking trail starts at the Pont de la Pêche parking area and climbs 786 meters over 8 kilometers. The best time to visit is from July to September when snow has melted and the path is safe to walk.
On clear days, the lake waters mirror the surrounding glacier slopes, creating a striking reflection. Alpine marmots inhabit the nearby meadows and can be spotted if you spend time watching the grasslands.
