Frigate Dom Fernando II e Glória, Naval museum ship in Cacilhas, Portugal
The Frigate Dom Fernando II e Glória is a wooden-hulled museum ship with 50 guns anchored on the south bank of the Tagus River in Cacilhas. The vessel displays its complete naval architecture and military equipment in their original state.
The ship was built in 1843 at the Royal shipyard in Daman, India, and served the Portuguese Navy for over 30 years. It made numerous voyages between Portugal and its colonies before being decommissioned in 1878.
The ship displays how sailors lived and worked aboard, with preserved spaces showing daily routines during 19th century Portuguese naval operations. Visitors can see authentic objects and furnishings that reflect the lives of these men at sea.
The ship is accessible to visitors daily and can be explored mostly on your own, with decks and rooms easy to navigate. Guides in several languages offer additional explanations about the vessel and naval history.
During its active service, the ship traveled roughly 185,000 kilometers, equivalent to about five times around the Earth. This makes it one of the most widely traveled armed vessels of its era.
