NRP Barracuda, Attack submarine museum in Cacilhas, Portugal

NRP Barracuda is an attack submarine now serving as a museum, positioned in a dry dock in Almada near Lisbon. The vessel measures about 58 meters long and retains its original equipment and layout, showing how a Cold War submarine was organized and operated.

The submarine was built in France and made its first dive in 1968 before serving in the Portuguese Navy through the 1990s. It played a role in the country's Cold War defense efforts during that era.

The vessel reflects how Portugal developed its naval capabilities during a specific era and how crews lived in its confined spaces. Walking through the compartments shows the daily experience of submariners who served aboard.

Visitors board via a gangway, but be aware that corridors are very narrow and doorways are low throughout the vessel. Plan enough time to navigate the compartments comfortably and wear shoes with good grip for safety on metal decks.

This is one of the few places where you can explore an entire military vessel from the inside, with compartments left much as they were during operations. The tight quarters offer a direct sense of what life was like for the crew members who worked in these spaces.
