Praça do Duque da Terceira, Pedestrian square with statue in Misericórdia, Lisbon, Portugal
Praça do Duque da Terceira is a stone pedestrian square in the Misericórdia neighborhood of Lisbon, Portugal. At its center stands a figurative bronze statue of the Duke of Terceira, placed on a prismatic stone plinth with carved decorative details.
The area was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake and was once known as Remolares, named after the craftsmen who made oars for ships during the Age of Discovery. The monument honoring the Duke was commissioned in 1860 and inaugurated in 1877.
The square takes its name from the Duke of Terceira, a military figure who played a central role in Portugal's liberal wars. Visitors often stop to look at the bronze statue up close, where carved olive branches and a shield decorate the stone base.
The square sits near Cais do Sodré, one of Lisbon's busiest transport hubs, making it easy to reach on foot from the waterfront. As a pedestrian zone, it can be crossed slowly without worrying about traffic.
Before the current monument was installed, the site held a sun clock known as the Meridiana of Remolares, used until 1874 to measure time by the sun's position. The statue itself was sculpted by José Simões de Almeida and later restored thanks to a private company's sponsorship.
