Almada, Urban municipality on the south bank of Tagus River, Portugal
Almada is a municipality on the southern bank of the Tagus River, situated directly across from Lisbon. The area comprises several districts including Cacilhas, Pragal, and Cova da Piedade, which together form an important urban center south of the river.
The area was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period and later occupied by Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs. Over the centuries, it developed into an important urban center shaped by these diverse influences.
The municipality maintains multiple theaters, exhibition spaces, and performance venues that showcase Portuguese arts through regular programs and annual festivals.
Ferries from Cacilhas regularly connect to central Lisbon and offer a quick and affordable crossing. The 25 de Abril Bridge also provides road and rail access between both sides of the river.
Costa da Caparica to the west borders a long, undeveloped Atlantic beach that stretches for many kilometers along the coast. This beach is popular with locals and visitors from the Lisbon region.
