Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary
Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary, Nature reserve in southeast Huntsville, United States.
Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in southeast Huntsville encompassing around 375 acres of bottomland hardwood forest, open fields, and farmland along the Flint River. The terrain includes swamp areas and forested wetlands that create diverse habitats for wildlife.
The land was transferred to the City of Huntsville through a donation by the Goldsmith and Schiffman families to preserve natural habitats. This gift established the sanctuary as a protected area for the river ecosystem.
This protected area serves as a key stop on the North Alabama Birding Trail, drawing birdwatchers year-round to observe local species. The sanctuary has become a gathering point for nature enthusiasts interested in wetland ecosystems.
Visitors can walk about three miles of flat trails through bottomlands and swamps, with designated parking areas and specific entry points available. The flat terrain makes exploration accessible for most visitors.
Great Blue Herons and Green Herons hunt for fish in the wetlands, while Belted Kingfishers patrol the waterways. These fishing birds are most active during early morning hours when visibility is best.
