Crescent Beach, Sand beach along Lake Michigan in Algoma, US.
Crescent Beach is a sand beach along Lake Michigan spanning roughly half a mile with fine sand throughout. A boardwalk made from recycled plastic lumber runs along the shore, connecting the visitor center to the marina area.
The site once served as a camping ground for Pottawatomie tribes traveling between their seasonal farming areas. European settlement gradually transformed the landscape, eventually leading to its development as a public beach destination.
The beach holds meaning as a gathering place where locals and visitors come together for seasonal festivals and everyday leisure. The Soar on the Shore event each year celebrates wind sports and regional food traditions with families and skilled performers.
Changing stations and restrooms are located at the northern end of the beach for visitor convenience. The boardwalk offers wheelchair access from both the visitor center and marina, making the area accessible from multiple points.
A staircase at the southern end was built during the WPA era and features a striking decorative detail made from colored beach stones. The stone pattern set in concrete commemorates the admission of Hawaii and Alaska as states.
