Hawaiian Electric Beach Park, Beach at Kahe Point, Oahu, US
Hawaiian Electric Beach Park is a sandy beach along Oahu's southwest coast where warm water outflows create an unusual marine environment. The shallow waters and abundant marine life make this area quite different from typical Hawaiian beaches.
An electric power plant was built near the beach in the mid-20th century, and its warm water discharges fundamentally changed the local marine ecosystem. The altered conditions created a habitat that now supports greater marine diversity than comparable natural beaches.
The beach attracts fishermen and divers who come to observe the abundant marine life, including sea turtles and dolphins. For local residents, this place represents a direct connection to the ocean and its living creatures.
The beach offers restrooms, showers, and parking for visitors who want to fish, swim, or explore the underwater world. The area is easy to reach and generally has calm conditions suitable for various water activities.
Two large cooling pipes from the power facility release warm water directly into the ocean, creating conditions that attract fish and marine animals in large numbers. Visitors often miss this unusual thermal feature, which fundamentally shapes what makes this beach different from others nearby.
