Hawaiian Railway Society

The Hawaiian Railway Society is a heritage railway in Ewa that operates train rides on three-foot narrow gauge tracks while maintaining a collection of vintage diesel locomotives and historical equipment. The restored route connects Ewa to Nanakuli and displays rolling stock from different periods of Hawaii's railroad era.

The organization was founded in 1970 when railroad enthusiasts came together to save locomotive No. 6 from being scrapped by Waialua Agricultural Company. From this rescue effort grew an institution that now documents Hawaii's railroad past.

The site displays a Merci boxcar, one of 49 gifts from French railways to the United States after World War II. This car tells a story of international friendship and draws visitors interested in cross-border railway history.

The site operates weekend train rides where visitors can explore historical routes and vintage trains. Comfortable clothing and sun protection are advisable since rides take place in the open air over extended periods.

The museum houses the last remaining Hawaiian road engine, a rare locomotive found nowhere else in the world. This singular train represents a chapter in island railway development that survives only here.
