Laguna El Pino

Laguna El Pino is a natural lake in Barberena surrounded by dense vegetation and beds of water hyacinths. The water body contains different habitats for wildlife and plants that extend across its entire shoreline.

The water body was protected by the Guatemalan government in 1955 to preserve its natural resources. This decision gave it formal protected status within the country.

Fishing families have used this lake for generations and gather regularly at its shores to share their catch and maintain local traditions. The waters serve as a gathering place for family celebrations and community events that shape the social fabric of the region.

Access to the lake is available on most weekdays, with early hours often providing the best time for birdwatching. Bring binoculars and light clothing, as the weather can change quickly and sunlight reflection off the water is intense.

The lake is home to several waterfowl species, including Pied-billed Grebes and Northern Jacanas, which inhabit the shallower areas of the water. These birds serve as important indicators of the ecosystem's health.
