Hellmouth

Hellmouth is a rock formation with a natural opening in the volcanic rock face through which water flows via a narrow channel into the sea. The mass rises dramatically from the water, creating a striking visual feature along the coastline.

Portuguese sailors named the formation in the 16th century because it resembled medieval church carvings depicting monster mouths. This name reflects how early Europeans interpreted this striking natural feature.

Local fishermen use this formation as a reference point during their daily work and view it as a natural boundary between different fishing grounds.

The formation can be reached via a marked trail from Ribeira Afonso village, with the best views during morning hours. Wear sturdy shoes and pay attention to tidal conditions, as accessibility may depend on them.

The rock formation creates distinctive sound patterns when waves hit the cavity, producing deep echoes that resound across the surrounding area. This natural acoustic effect is especially noticeable during stronger wave activity.
