National Lyceum, Secondary school in São Tomé, São Tomé and Príncipe.
The National Lyceum is a secondary school in São Tomé located along Avenida Marginal 12 Julho and designed by architect Mário de Oliveira. The building was constructed as part of the 1962 urbanization plan and continues to shape the cityscape with its solid, functional structure.
The school was founded in 1969 as Escola Técnica Silva e Cunha and remained the country's only secondary school for decades. Only in 2011 did another secondary school open, ending its monopoly on higher education.
The building displays Portuguese architectural features that shape its appearance and reflect the island's colonial past. These elements are visible in the facades and overall structure, which form part of the recognized Portuguese heritage in São Tomé.
The school is located on Avenida Marginal 12 Julho, a main thoroughfare in central São Tomé, and is easily accessible on foot. The building can be viewed from the street, where its architectural structure is clearly visible from the outside.
The building served as the country's sole secondary school for many years, shaping multiple generations of national leaders. A former Prime Minister of the nation attended this school in the 1970s.
