Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust, Nature reserve in Pointe-a-Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago.
Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust is a nature reserve with two freshwater lakes surrounded by around 40 tree species across 32 hectares. It protects 86 bird species and provides visitors with three walking trails, boat rides, and a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk along the first pond.
The reserve was established in 1966 as the second oldest waterfowl sanctuary of its kind worldwide. It has focused on protecting threatened wetland bird species and their habitats since its creation.
The Learning Centre runs educational programs for students and researchers, displaying information about local wildlife and featuring exhibits on Amerindian heritage.
Wear comfortable shoes as trails pass through damp terrain, and bring water and insect repellent for protection. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching when most birds are most active.
The reserve sits within an active petrochemical complex, showing how industrial operations and wildlife protection can coexist. This makes it a notable example of nature conservation working alongside industrial development.
