Mount Saint Benedict, Benedictine monastery in Saint Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago
Mount Saint Benedict is a Benedictine monastery set in the northern mountains of Trinidad at an elevation of about 660 feet (200 meters) above sea level. The complex includes the monastery buildings, guest accommodations, gardens, and work areas where the monks live and carry out their daily routines.
Brazilian Benedictine monks founded this sanctuary in 1912 after acquiring land in the region with local support. Over the decades, the monastery became an established center of monastic life in the Caribbean.
The monastery follows the Rule of Saint Benedict, which shapes how the monks balance prayer with practical work in their daily lives. Visitors can observe this principle in action as they walk through the grounds and see the community engaged in both spiritual and productive activities.
Visitors can stay at Pax Guest House or join guided walks through the grounds and gardens. The monastery shop sells locally made yogurt and other products, and the location offers good opportunities for watching birds and enjoying the hillside setting.
The monastery produces PAX Yogurt, a product line that began as a dietary need for the monks and grew into a well-known commercial item throughout the island. The production remains an important part of the community's economic activities.
