Caroni Swamp
Caroni Swamp is a wetland and nature reserve in the San Juan-Laventille region of Trinidad and Tobago. It spans a large area of mangrove forests, waterways, and channels that support diverse bird species and wildlife, best explored by boat through the shallow waters.
The swamp developed over many decades through natural processes and was later established as a protected area to preserve its delicate ecology. Its importance became recognized when its potential for bird watching and ecological research was understood.
The best way to explore the area is by guided boat tour through the channels, especially in early morning hours when birds are most active. Bring water, insect repellent, and binoculars to observe wildlife comfortably and protect yourself from sun and mosquitoes.
The site is known for sightings of scarlet ibis with red faces that fly in large flocks against the sky, especially at sunset. This spectacular daily return spectacle draws visitors who want to witness this natural show during their visit.
