Asa Wright Nature Centre, Nature reserve in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago
Asa Wright Nature Centre is a protected forest reserve nestled in the Northern Range mountains, containing several types of woodlands and a wide range of animal species. Maintained trails wind through these lands, letting visitors move through the forest and observe its plants and creatures.
The land began as Spring Hill Estate, a working plantation for cocoa, coffee, and citrus crops. It transformed into a research and conservation facility in 1967, shifting from farming to nature study and protection.
The centre connects visitors with local environmental work and shows how the forest fits into the life of nearby communities. People here engage in conservation efforts that reflect their relationship with the natural surroundings.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring rain gear, as trails can be wet and steep in places. Guided walks help you learn about what you see, and sleeping rooms are available if you want to spend more than a day there.
The reserve holds a breeding colony of Oilbirds, unusual nocturnal birds that use sound clicks to navigate in Dunston Cave. These rare birds are seldom found in places easy for visitors to reach and watch.
