Sculptures sur Granit de Laongo, Open-air sculpture museum in Laongo, Burkina Faso
Sculptures sur Granit de Laongo is an open-air museum where monumental works have been carved directly into natural granite formations by international artists. The collection spreads across a large rocky landscape and displays geometric, organic, and figurative forms that speak different artistic languages.
The project began in 1989 when an international symposium brought artists from several continents together to carve permanent works into the granite stones. Additional symposiums followed over subsequent years, transforming this location into a growing art collection site.
The works blend African mythology, abstract forms, and human figures that express artistic traditions from multiple continents. Visitors see how contemporary creation interacts with the local landscape and heritage.
Visitors can choose between guided tours led by participating artists or explore independently using informative booklets available at the site. It helps to arrive early in the morning to enjoy the best light and avoid the strongest heat.
Artists carve directly into the stone on-site rather than installing pre-made pieces, meaning each sculpture relates physically to the natural rock formation it occupies. This approach has caused the artworks to merge organically with the landscape.
