Statue of Liberty, Bronze statue in Luxembourg Gardens, France.
The Statue of Liberty is a bronze work in Paris depicting a 2.85 meter tall figure. The statue shows an upright woman with a raised torch in her right hand and a tablet bearing text in her left hand.
The statue was designed by Auguste Bartholdi as the original model for his more famous work and later placed in the Luxembourg Gardens. After damage and theft of its torch, it was transferred to the Musée d'Orsay in 2012 where it remains protected.
This bronze figure shows a woman holding a torch and tablet, embodying the French ideal of liberty. It was long a familiar landmark in the Luxembourg Gardens where visitors could encounter it while walking through the park.
The original now resides at the Musée d'Orsay in a controlled environment where it is permanently displayed. A bronze replica replaces it in the Luxembourg Gardens and can be visited there at any time.
Bartholdi created this work as a test model before devoting himself to the massive New York project. This smaller version allowed him to realize his innovative design ideas in France first.
